Cet album réunit 10 démos composées pour Mercury Records par Bowie et le guitariste John Hutchinson. Tous les enregistrements sont le résultat d'une unique prise et ont été effectués chez Bowie lui-même sur un magnétophone Revox. Le coffret The 'Mercury' Demos est proposé dans un packaging ressemblant à la boîte des bandes masters et comprend un disque vinyle, un tirage photo et deux planches contact photo, ainsi que des notes d'accompagnement écrites par Mark Adams. Ce coffret collector soigné reprend même l’écriture de David Bowie pour les titres des enregistrements.
